I'm almost embarrased to promote this campaign for Burger King, but it's the kind of American crassness that the world does need to see.

I can just hear the ad agency suits convincing the client: "... to sell more burgers, we need to remind people of their first burger experience. We need burger (specifically whopper) virgins. (And in America, good luck with that.) So, let's travel around the world to remote areas where they haven't tried a burger before and give them a Whopper and a Big Mac and ask them which one is better. The "virgins" will be unencumbered by the influence of any advertising, or past experience, and will simply judge the best product....and that'll help us convince Americans how good the burger experience is that they now take for granted. Yeah! Oh, and it'll only cost a squillion dollars to airlift in a special BK broiler to each village and make them fresh. And, let's see we're going to need a crew of 40, and..."

And so the city slicker Americans arrive in these remote places to educate them on the fine western cuisine they are promoting. The bemused subjects politely eat the product (though not knowing HOW you manage to eat something so big and clumsy) and make appropriate comments. This, in places where, who knows they probably struggle to get access to clean water, or basic health care. Still, a decent hamburger will probably solve all their problems and show them the wonders of that great country America.

I just couldn't believe what I saw. Do watch it - right through to the credits - go on, there are some real "moments" in that video.

The reaction on the hamburgers? "Not as good as seal meat" said one unconvinced tester.  I wonder if the Americans tried any of that while they were there? Probably no need, as they did have their broiler with them so as not to miss their favourite taste of home while they travelled the world.

 (sigh)
