I had the thrill of attending a Fashion Week show this week (to see the Trelise Cooper show) and, apart from wowing me, it caused me to think about fashion.
I was reminded of the very gorgeous Jessica Arrington's talk at this year's TED. I noticed her each day at the conference not only because she was vivacious and up-beat (just my kind of person) but also because she wore THE most amazing clothes. How very New York (she does work in Manhattan) I thought; how chique.
Turns out I was wrong. Very Very wong.
I've also been working recently with final year design students at Victoria University, and have listened to ideas on wearable technology. Fashion has danced around the edges of this, but I don't think I've seen anything yet that really makes me take notice. (there's been a lot of gimmicks) I wondered when we'd see more technology on the catwalk. Then, I was reminded of, Fiorenzo Omenetto's talk where he gives us an insight into the INCREDIBLE things you can do with silk. Turns out, quite a lot like: transmit light; heal wounds; administer drugs; house holograms; make natural sensors; bio-degrable food containers; etc.
If you're not into the science of it - stick with it - the demonstrations after the scientific introductions are really worth seeing.
I know Trelise Cooper loves to work with silk; perhaps soon we'll see garments that instead of reflecting light (like sequins) actually transmit it - in a beautiful way?
I'm off to see the wonderful Wearable Arts Show tonight - that's bound to give me more food/fabric to ponder.
